TikTok Shop’s Impact on Supply Chains

The world is undergoing a shift in how people purchase items, driven by social media—particularly TikTok.

It’s not just a shift in purchasing, either. Discovery of new products is also shifting to social media platforms.

TikTok, in particular, has a highly engaged user base that relies on user-generated content. One spinoff is the review of products. Many people, especially Gen Zers, are looking for authentic reviews on TikTok. Combine TikTok’s algorithms that drive content to their users, and its integrated online shop, and you have a powerful shopping arena.

TikTok reports that 70% of its users find new brands on its platform. Additionally, 75% of users are likely to make a purchase while using TikTok. Ultimately, 83% of users report that TikTok influences their purchasing decisions.

All of this success has occurred in a relatively short period, as the TikTok Shop didn’t open until September 2023.

Discussion Questions:

1.  What issues does TikTok Shop raise for supply chains?

Guidance: The sudden, almost instantaneous, demand for items that go viral on TikTok and other social media platforms is practically impossible to fulfill with traditional supply chains.

For supply chains to meet this surge in demand, they must become more agile. This includes different forecasting methods that monitor TikTok and other social media for emerging trends.

More traditional inventory management systems tend to centralize inventory for efficiency. Decentralization could speed delivery to customers.

Shipping methods and customs processing must also be considered to ensure timely delivery to customers.

2. How can companies prevent overselling?

Guidance: One of the more critical problems on TikTok is overselling. This refers to selling more items than are in stock. With the possibility of items going viral, it is essential to use a perpetual inventory system. Furthermore, the inventory count should be closely tied to the ordering process to ensure that items sold are readily available for fulfillment. Or, at the very least, let customers know that the item’s fulfillment will be delayed.

3. What product types are especially impacted by TikTok Shop?

Guidance: Fashion has been one of the most heavily impacted product types. In the past, fashion trends were primarily affected by the Big Four fashion shows. Today, social media is a significant driver of fashion trends.

Cosmetics is another popular product, led by the first brand on the TikTok Shop, e.l.f. (which stands for eyes, lips, face). The e.l.f. website has a #SkinTok page to show popular products.

Other popular items include home décor, pet supplies, and phone accessories.
