The Challenging Market for Recycled Clothing

Renewcell had a great product idea: recycling discarded garments into new materials for new clothes.

The company had plans to produce 120,000 metric tons of cellulose pulp a year to supply retail brands such as H&M, Tommy Hilfiger, and Levi. In the end, Renewcell was not able to deliver a reasonably priced quality pulp from recycled garments to its customers and filed for bankruptcy.

Rolls-Royce Product Redesign Doubles Operating Time

Rolls-Royce is planning to invest in blade coatings of A350-1000 engines to improve durability and resilience.

This coating will be especially effective for aircraft  operating in areas with lots of sand and dust. The company is working with Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to certify the new blade for the engine to double its time-on-wing.

McDonald’s and Reusable Dine-In Packaging

McDonald’s has 21 reusable containers for dine-in customers in France, including red plastic containers for fries, clear plastic beverage glasses, and white plastic cups for chicken nuggets.

French law mandated these changes, which were implemented in 2023.

While McDonald’s has worked hard over the years to be more environmentally conscious with its packaging, it firmly believes that this new model “doesn’t work.”  Cost, convenience, sustainability, and operational issues related to this law are complex, and the overall impact remains to be seen.


Pandora Jewelry Made with Recycled Metal by Mid-2024

Beating its target by a year, the Danish company Pandora expects to source only recycled gold and silver by mid-2024.

Pandora is considered the largest jewelry company in volume of products sold. Last year 97% of its gold and silver were from recycled sources, and the company has made rapid progress on the goal it set back in 2020.

In another important step towards sustainability, Pandora already only uses lab-grown diamonds.
