UAW Deal Raises Ford’s Breakeven Point

To end strikes in its biggest factories, Ford entered into a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers Union to increase the wages of its 57,000 workers by 25% in the next four and a half years.

The increase in wages will add $850 to $900 labor cost per vehicle.  Ford faces a challenging task in balancing vehicle price, margin, and demand while remaining competitive relative to non-unionized automakers such as Tesla.

Google and Anthropic: Strategic Partnership

Google will invest $2 billion in Anthropic to further develop Claude 2, a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Claude 2 can summarize up to 75,000 words and is regarded as the most “self-aware” chatbot. It has been trained to be explicit about what it knows and does not know and answers only questions that it has training data to support.

Nissan Going All-Electric in Europe

Nissan is going all-electric in Europe by 2030.

The company’s all-electric future plans are undergirded by “Concept 20-23”, a sporty urban fun-to-drive city electric vehicle.  The Concept 20-23 has many performance enhancements (e.g., cobalt-free tech to reduce battery costs) and next-gen design features (e.g., circular LED headlights, butterfly doors, etc.) that may help shape the future of automobiles.

Dollar General Dual DC To Serve 1,000 Stores

In Blair, Nebraska, Dollar General has opened its first dual distribution center.

At full capacity, the DC will supply traditional and fresh produce to 1,000 Dollar General stores.  The discount retailer expanded fresh produce options recently at its stores.

This site was chosen for its central location, quality roads, and hard-working labor. The Blair DC will serve as a hub for distributing products across stores in the U.S.
