TSA’s Self-Service Checkpoint

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is testing a new self-screening system at the Las Vegas airport.

Many people are comparing the new system to self-checkout lanes at grocery stores. The system uses a virtual agent to answer questions, who do not have to be physically present at the checkpoint.

The system promises to streamline the process and use fewer agents.

The Changing Retail Checkout Lane

Worldwide, a variety of approaches are being tried for retail checkout. Many of these approaches are changing how checkout lanes function.

Approaches include facial recognition for payment; scan-and-go with personalized pricing; a smart grocery cart that identifies items as they are placed in the cart; and a smart grocery store with frictionless checkout that allows customers to view and approve their basket.

The Demise of Self-Checkout?

Self-checkout has been an ongoing approach by retailers to reduce the need for cashiers and lower costs. However, many retailers are reevaluating their use of self-checkout.

Five Below has reduced the use of self-checkout, especially at stores that have higher “shrink.”  Shrink is a term used to describe “theft and other inventory loss.”  Dollar General is removing self-checkout at 300 stores with the highest shrink.
