Walmart Refocuses Innovation Strategy

Since opening an innovation hub known as Store No. 8 in 2017, Walmart has incorporated resulting new ideas (e.g., in-home delivery and text/voice shopping) into its operations.

The closing of Store No. 8 signals Walmart’s strategies to rein in high inflation by trimming expenses and shifting innovation to local teams.

Enviva Overestimates Demand for Wood Pellets

In 4th quarter 2022, American company Enviva agreed to buy 800,000 metric tons of wood pellets to expand its supply, betting prices and demand would remain high into the future. The company also made plans to build more capacity.

Power plants in Europe had to seek alternatives to fuel sources from Russia, and with the increasing interest in biomass fuels, Enviva predicted an ongoing increase in demand and price for wood pellets.

Ford Slows Battery Expansion for EV Market

A myriad of challenges—both external and internal—are leading automotive giant Ford Motor Company to delay construction of its second electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Kentucky.

Ford has previously announced two large-scale EV battery plants in Kentucky, with start date of 2025 and 2026, respectively. The first Kentucky EV battery plant is on schedule, but the second plant’s opening is now pushed out with no specific start date.
