The Changing Retail Checkout Lane

Worldwide, a variety of approaches are being tried for retail checkout. Many of these approaches are changing how checkout lanes function.

Approaches include facial recognition for payment; scan-and-go with personalized pricing; a smart grocery cart that identifies items as they are placed in the cart; and a smart grocery store with frictionless checkout that allows customers to view and approve their basket.

CosMc’s Stellar Chicago Debut

Judging from the long lines, customers think McDonald’s new brain child, “CosMc’s,” is out of this world!

Using a retro character from the ’80’s as the new store mascot, McDonald’s launched the first CosMc’s location in Chicago in December 2023.  Customers have been flocking to the new beverage and small snack format store ever since.

Ten more locations are slated to open in Texas this year.

The layouts of convenience stores (c-stores) are changing. Much of this change in layout results from location constraints or desired changes in traditional c-store strategy.

Four new types of c-store layouts are gaining popularity: two-stories, food-focused, frictionless, and unstaffed micro-markets or micro-stores.

The two-story c-store allows for more space on smaller lots, and provides separate zones for different customers (e.g., truckers).

Target Blames Organized Retail Crime for Store Closures

Target claims that looting, violence, and theft have forced the company to close several stores.

To what extent does organized retail crime actually contribute to store closures? In most cases, it is difficult to tell. Aggregate data point to a “healthy” shrink level, whereas big box stores have a different perspective on the matter, probably because they are easier targets and victims. Nevertheless, theft and shrink have multiple causes that should be addressed to improve performance.
