Low cost is no longer the only reason why US companies outsource manufacturing to China.

Despite Apple’s commitment to make a Mac computer in Austin, Texas, the inability of a US supplier to mass produce screws led the tech giant to order the items from China.

This situation exemplifies the challenges facing US manufacturing. Not only is it impossible to beat Chinese labor costs, but it is also difficult to compete in terms of scale, skills, and infrastructure.

Known for its focus on efficiency, UPS is always on the lookout for ways to save time and offer better service to its customers.

UPSNav, due to be in place by 2020, updates United Parcel Service’s previous route optimization system for its 60,000 drivers.  The new system will recalculate routes all day long, taking traffic, remaining deliveries, and pick-up requests into account.

UPS drivers make about 125 stops per day, so shaving even seconds off each stop can result in huge savings.  […]

Wow Bao is opening a restaurant in Chicago that removes wait staff from the ordering and pickup of food.

This will be its sixth restaurant in the Chicagoland area, and its fourteenth overall.  The chain plans to double its number of locations with the new locations using this automated technology.
