No Chick-fil-A at the Super Bowl

No Chick-fil-A at the Super Bowl

February 4, 2019

Chick-fil-A will soon be the third largest fast food chain. And the College Park, Georgia-based company continues to uphold its long-standing policy of being closed on Sundays.

One of its locations is a fast-food stand inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the new home for the Atlanta Falcons.  This stadium is also home to Super Bowl LIII.

The no-Sundays policy means, for the vast majority of the Falcons’ home games, and for Super Bowl LIII, fans will not be able to enjoy Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwiches during the game.

1. Why did Chick-fil-A choose this location, if it will be closed for most of the Atlanta Falcons’ games?

Guidance: Although the location will be closed for the majority of the Atlanta Falcons’ games, there are many other events at the stadium.  These include Major League Soccer (Atlanta United FC), college football games including Continue reading

3M: Scrubbing Waste, One Product At A Time

3M: Scrubbing Waste, One Product At A Time

January 14, 2019

3M announces plans to incorporate sustainability goals for each of the roughly 1,000 new products it introduces each year.

Expanding on the success of the more general sustainability initiatives it launched in 2015 as part of a ten year program, 3M takes its goals a step beyond what most companies are doing by looking at the individual products rather than just system-wide goals.

R & D will look carefully to see how each product might reduce materials or use recycled materials, such as its plan for all Scotch-Brite scrub sponges to be made with recycled plastics by 2019.  Other alternatives include reducing waste, energy, or water usage in factories or helping customers use the products in a more sustainable way.

This post is based on the Star Tribune article, 3M: Every new product must meet a sustainability goal, by Dee DePass, December 5, 2018. Image source: Nattika/Shutterstock.

Discussion Questions:

1. How does 3M’s approach differ from some companies’ approaches to sustainability?

Guidance: Whereas many companies take a big picture approach to sustainability, looking at how to reduce waste or energy in their factories overall, 3M wants each product to incorporate sustainable solutions.  This can include techniques Continue reading

Discussion Questions:

1. What is the best way for UPS to manage the national hiring day event?

Guidance: Project management would be the best approach to handle this event.  It is complicated by having over 170 locations.  It’s a good opportunity to discuss how to plan such an event using project management techniques.

2. What processes must be in place for this event?

Guidance: Although UPS hires seasonal workers every year, processing over 40,000 applications efficiently will take some planning.  Applications need to be completed correctly, information Continue reading
