Knock Knock, It’s Walmart

Walmart launched inHome Delivery as a new service recently. The retailer has also partnered with a company called Level Home. That company’s Level Lock product, available through WalMart, allows entry to a home without having to install additional hardware to a door.  The Level Lock is attached to your current door lock and can be installed in ten minutes with a screwdriver.

For Walmart’s inHome Delivery, employees deliver groceries to your pantry and refrigerator while wearing cameras, using a one-time access code provided by Level Home for added security.

Discussion Questions:

1. How important was it for Level Home to partner with Walmart? What are the major product development benefits of this partnership?

Guidance: Students should recognize that Walmart’s funding and interest in this technology will provide Level Home with resources to add more features to its product more quickly.  The growth of home delivery for other retailers may come about should this service for Walmart prove worthwhile.

2. What are the risks to Walmart in going forward with this new delivery service?

Guidance: Review risk mitigation strategies.  Walmart will have many new risks to address from on-time delivery to potential theft caused by a stranger.  Take for example a scenario where the in-home delivery person texts a friend about the fancy items in one particular home.  Perhaps this friend tells another, who decides to break into that home later.  A brief discussion could surface many other risks, such as a dog attacking the in-home delivery person, or entering the home to find a child left alone.  Students should discuss three to five scenarios and then describe a policy that will manage those risks.
